Keeping Your Puppy Cool In Hot Weather

As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that puppies aren’t able to regulate their body temperature as effectively as adult dogs. Their systems are still developing, making them more vulnerable to overheating and heatstroke—even on milder days. That’s why it’s essential to take extra care when the weather warms up.

Avoid midday walks.
Stick to early morning or late evening outings when the sun is lower and pavements are cooler. A simple test: place your hand on the pavement—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.

Hydration is key
Always make sure your puppy has access to fresh, cool water. Frozen treats or ice cubes can offer both hydration and a fun way to cool down.

They need more rest.
Puppies tire faster than adult dogs, especially in the heat. At Tom & Toto, we make sure our puppies get plenty of breaks throughout the day. They rest indoors in our shady puppy cabin, and we also have air-conditioned rooms to keep them cool and comfortable. If they need extra rest, we’ll make sure they do.

Calm, enriching activities
Instead of high-energy play, we offer scent-based snuffling games to mentally stimulate without raising their body temperature. It’s a gentle, enriching alternative to tearing around in the heat.

Know the signs of heatstroke
Excessive panting, drooling, confusion, or vomiting are red flags. If you’re ever unsure, it’s always best to contact your vet immediately.

With a few adjustments your puppy can safely enjoy the summer months. At Tom & Toto, we’re here to help keep them happy, healthy, and cool—every step of the way.
