Before firework season starts:
Forward planning before firework season starts is essential. The first thing you can do is provide your dog with a safe place- whether this is a crate, bed, or even a quiet corner is a room somewhere. It’s best not to disturb your dog when they are in this area, so they know its their own little haven.
It will help to train your dog to associate this quiet area with positive memories- giving them their treats there and having all their favourite toys ready and waiting for them. It’s important your dog can access this safe space even when you’re out at work or not home, so they can learn it’s safe and enjoyable.
Playing relaxing music is the most common. Classic FM’s pet classics was a firm favourite from our community last year and we would thoroughly recommend it again. They will be hosting two programmes from 6-10pm on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th November.
During firework season:
- Take your dog for walks while it is still light outside to avoid times when fireworks displays are likely
- Put your dog in it’s safe place each evening before the fireworks begin, so it won’t be unusual for them to go there once the fireworks start
- Make sure you have things to keep you occupied, so you can keep your dog company if need be
- Close windows and draw your curtains to muffle the sound and flashes from the fireworks
- Put on some music or TV to mask the firework sounds, whichever you normally have on in the evenings so it’s not out of routine
- Ignore the fireworks yourself to show your dog there is nothing to be nervous about
At the end of each evening, always reward your dog for their good behaviour to keep the association with fireworks a positive experience.
After firework season:
The morning after a fireworks displays, always check your garden for any debris which may put your pet at risk. Fireworks contain highly toxic ingredients that can be fatal to your pet if accidentally eaten, so remember to stay extra aware when out and about.
